Rats are great friends and can bond intimately with their owners. You can hold and play with them but keep an eye on them. They can quickly get away. They are very intelligent and can learn to come when their name is called. While not all rats are the same, this will advise on basic care. Educate yourself on your specific species of rat.

CONTACT A VET IF:

Rats can live together in same-gender pairs to prevent aggression and unwanted breeding. House your rat in a cage that is at least 24x12x12" with multiple levels. Do not put them in direct sunlight and keep the temperature around 65-75 degrees F in low humidity. Cover the bottom of the cage with 1-2" of paper or aspen bedding. Spot clean as needed and change bedding monthly. Plastic hides should be added for play and chewing. Add mineral wheels and wood chews to keep teeth healthy.

75% of your rat's diet should be pelleted food and should be fed daily. Fresh veggies such as dark leafy greens should be fed every other day. Remove leftovers after a few hours. Feed fruits such as Apples, bananas, or melons once a week. Remove leftovers after a few hours. They need clean water at all times.
